Talking Movies and MORE with Miss Movie Fan

The Interview

Who is Miss Movie Fan?
Who am I? Hmmm… busy single mom of two girls; huge movie geek; office manager; Sunday school teacher; animal lover; chocoholic; singer/dancer; PTA queen; chef; Bunco player; shoe addict. The list goes on.

What is it about movies that spark your interest to watch and to review them?
Movies are my guilty pleasure… my escape from reality. I grew up watching old movies with my Mom. Right away, I was hooked on the classics… Cary Grant, Audrey Hepburn, Hitchcock, musicals… you name it! Then I deveoped a taste for Westerns and War Movies watching with my Dad.  Back in college, I started writing reviews for a local radio station. Over the years I’ve always recommended films to friends and family members (who lovingly refer to me as the ‘Queen of Movie Trivia’). In recent years, I began posting my movie reviews on the web and found a whole new audience.

What are your three favorite movies, and why?
Wow, I have so many favorites. It is really hard to narrow it down to only three. So, here are the first three that popped into my head.· The Princess Bride – I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it on the big screen in 1987. It has something for everyone, “Fencing, fighting, torture, revenge, giants, monsters, chases, escapes, true love, miracles...”.· Casablanca – Bogart and Bergman at their best. This film is the perfect mix of adventure, intrigue, heroism, and romance. · Young Frankenstein – I’ve seen this one hundreds of times and it never ceases to make me laugh myself silly. Sheer genius!

What are your three least favorite movies, and why?
Even when movies are bad, I still get some enjoyment out of watching them. I typically end up renting these ‘gems’ out of morbid curiosity just so I can pick them apart. It’s tough for me to pick just three in this category as well. I’ve seen some pretty bad movies over the years.· Glitter – Some of the lousiest cinematography I’ve seen, combined with the most pathetic and at times comical attempt at acting by Mariah Carey.· Showgirls – Elizabeth Berkeley gave a performance mirrored only by the stench of rotting garbage in this no holds barred T&A parade.· Shanghai Surprise – Proof that Hollywood couples may have chemistry off screen, but it doesn’t necessarily translate on screen. (Gigli also comes to mind in this category). This movie had no redeeming qualities whatsoever…. ridiculous plot and painfully bad acting by Madonna.

Are there specific genres that you are drawn to, or do enjoy an eclectic array of genres?
I’m all for variety when it comes to movie genres, but I’m often drawn to obscure, lesser-known films. The beauty of the cinema is that there’s always a movie to fit my ever-changing mood. I’m just a fan of great filmmaking.

What, in your opinion, makes a really great movie?
The mark of a good film is its ability to entertain. But a great movie is creative, surprising and it evokes emotion in the viewer.

I know there are a plethora of reviews on your MySpace page (http://www.myspace.com/missmoviefan); can people check out your opinions and reviews on other online sites?
In addition to the movie reviews posted in my Blog at My Space, you can also find my opinions and film feedback on MatchFlick, Flixter and IMDB. I also have some of my favorite movie clips posted on my You Tube page. I was recently asked to join the FilmArcade.Net movie website as a contributing writer of reviews beginning this month.

We know that you are a fan of movies; what do you like doing when you're NOT watching a good flick?
When I’m NOT watching a good flick, I enjoy dancing (mostly West Coast Swing and Salsa). I also love to cook. I have some experimental recipes as well as my classics like apple pie.

What 2008 movie releases are your anxiously anticipating?
There are so many movies I’m looking forward to seeing in 2008: Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull – Harrison Ford is back and Cate Blanchett joins the cast. Let’s hope Spielberg’s latest installment lives up to the others in this series.

Iron Man – Robert Downey Jr, Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard, Jeff Bridges, and Samuel L. Jackson star in this sci-Fi/action flick directed by Jon Favreau.

Bonneville – a most promising ‘chick flick’ drama with a stellar cast including Jessica Lange, Kathy Bates, Joan Allen, Christine Baranski and Tom Skerrit.

The Children of Huang Shi – Jonathan Rhys Myers stars with Chow Yun-Fat and Michelle Yeoh in this story of a British journalist who saves a group of orphaned children during the Japanese occupation of China in 1937.

Smurfs – just because I watched it as a kid and I’m curious to see what they do with it in CGI.

Penelope – a modern day romance starring Christina Ricci, James McAvoy and Reese Witherspoon.

More notable sequels: Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince & Chronicles of Narnia Prince Caspian – I’m a huge fan of the books and movies. Also, The Dark Knight – Maggie Gyllenhaal joins Christian Bale and Heath Ledger in this follow-up to Batman Begins.
